Pit Stop Button

Glossary Pit Stop Button

Safety switch in the elevator pit that stops all car movement when activated.

Full Definition
The pit stop button (pit stop device) is a safety switch located in the elevator pit that, when activated, immediately stops the elevator and prevents any further movement until reset. EN 81-20 requires a stop switch accessible from the pit entry point before a person enters the pit, to prevent unexpected car movement while the pit is occupied. The switch forms part of the safety chain. It must be clearly labelled, protected from unintentional operation, and resettable only from the pit itself.
