Elevator Modernisation: Scope, EN 81-20 Compliance and Energy Savings Potential

Glossary Elevator Modernisation

The planned replacement or upgrade of major elevator components to restore safety compliance, improve performance, and extend operational life by 15–25 years.

Full Definition
Elevator modernisation typically targets installations that are 20–30 years old. The scope commonly includes replacing the controller, VVVF drive, traction machine, door operators, landing and car fixtures, travelling cable, and guide shoes. A modernised elevator must comply with the currently applicable edition of EN 81-20 to the extent practicable, and in many jurisdictions a new Declaration of Conformity is required. Headroom and pit depth must be re-evaluated against current standards. Energy savings of 40–60 % are achievable by replacing a ward-Leonard or single-speed system with a gearless PMSM and VVVF drive. A modernisation assessment survey typically precedes the work.
