Wireless or wired sensor devices installed on elevator components to capture real-time operational data for remote monitoring and predictive maintenance platforms.
Full Definition
IoT (Internet of Things) sensors are embedded or retrofitted onto elevator components to continuously monitor conditions that indicate health and performance. Common sensor types include vibration sensors on the motor and gearbox to detect bearing wear, temperature sensors on the motor windings and brake, current sensors on the drive, acoustic sensors for door mechanism noise, door cycle counters, car position sensors, and weight sensors. The sensor data is aggregated by an on-board IoT gateway and transmitted to a cloud platform via cellular, Wi-Fi, or ethernet. Analytics algorithms identify anomalies and predict failures. Retrofit IoT kits allow older elevators to gain remote monitoring capability without a full controller upgrade. By 2025, major manufacturers had IoT connectivity on hundreds of thousands of units in service.
