Elevator shaft wiring encompasses all fixed electrical conductors, conduit runs, junction boxes, and terminal strips permanently installed in the hoistway and pit to carry power, control, and communication signals between the machine room (or controller cabinet in MRL installations) and the landing door interlocks, hall call buttons, floor indicator displays, pit stop switches, and shaft lighting fixtures. Shaft wiring is distinct from the travelling cable, which moves with the car; shaft wiring is static once installed. EN 81-20 clause 13 requires that all hoistway wiring be installed in metallic conduit or cable duct where it may be exposed to mechanical damage or where the minimum horizontal distance to moving parts is less than 50 mm. Wiring must be colour-coded and clearly labelled to facilitate fault-finding; safety circuit conductors are identified with a distinctive colour (typically orange or yellow-green) and must not share conduit with power conductors. All junction boxes in the hoistway must be rated IP 54 minimum to resist moisture and dust. Ground (earth) continuity of the entire shaft wiring installation — including conduit, cable trays, door frame metalwork, and junction box enclosures — is verified by low-resistance earth bonding test at installation commissioning and at each periodic inspection.
