Glossary Rated Load

The maximum net load in kilograms that an elevator is designed, built, and certified to carry at its rated speed, forming the basis for all structural and traction calculations.

Rated load (contract load or nominal capacity) is determined during the design phase from the intended use, car plan dimensions, and traffic analysis. EN 81-20 Annex C provides minimum rated load values based on car usable area (e.g. 1.0 m² usable area = minimum 240 kg; 2.4 m² = minimum 800 kg). Structural components — car frame, suspension ropes, guide rails, buffers — are all calculated for rated load. Governor trip and safety gear stopping tests are performed with rated load. Car rated capacity in persons is typically rated load ÷ 75 kg. Overloading beyond 110 % triggers the overload device. Rated load is displayed on the capacity plate inside the car and stated in the Declaration of Conformity. For goods elevators, rated load may reach 10 000 kg or more; for standard passenger elevators, 450–2 500 kg.
