Glossary Anti-Creep Device

A safety device on hydraulic elevators that prevents slow downward movement (creep) of the car due to hydraulic oil leakage.

Full Definition
In hydraulic elevators, internal valve or seal leakage can cause the car to drift downward from a landing over time—a phenomenon called creep. The anti-creep device monitors car position relative to the floor and, if creep exceeds a defined limit (typically 20–30 mm below floor level), activates the power unit to re-level the car. If the re-levelling pump cycles too frequently, an alarm is raised and the lift is taken out of service for inspection. EN 81-2 (hydraulic lifts) requires anti-creep protection to prevent entrapment and tripping hazards. The device is distinct from the normal automatic releveling feature.
