Service elevators are designed for mixed use — primarily goods and equipment movement, but also accessible to staff and occasionally to the public. They typically feature finished interiors (protective panels, kickplates), controlled access systems, and are installed in accessible locations within the building. Freight elevators (cargo lifts) are designed exclusively for goods and may be operated only by authorized personnel; their interiors are utilitarian with no decorative finish requirement, and they are typically loaded by pallet trucks or forklifts at dedicated loading docks.
What door configurations are available for service elevators?
Service elevators most commonly use centre-opening or two-speed sliding door operators with clear opening widths of 900–1200 mm to accommodate standard trolleys and laundry carts. Through-car configurations (front and rear opening doors) are specified for applications where goods need to flow through the car without turning — such as in hospital kitchen service lifts or hotel linen distribution systems. Heavy-duty swing-type doors are used in some industrial service applications.
What interior finishes are recommended for service elevators in food and beverage environments?
In food service, catering, and healthcare environments, service elevator interiors must be easy to clean and resistant to sanitizing chemicals. Can a service elevator be used as an emergency evacuation lift?
Standard service elevators are not designed for fire evacuation use and must not be used by occupants during a fire. However, with appropriate modifications — including dedicated fire-rated shaft enclosure, independent power supply, fire service control mode, and smoke detection integration — a service elevator can be designated as a firefighter's lift per EN 81-72. This designation requires additional type examination and approval by the relevant building control authority.
