What does a periodic elevator inspection cover?
A full periodic inspection covers the machine room and equipment, drive machinery and traction sheave, guide rails and fixings, car and counterweight suspension ropes or chains, hydraulic cylinder and piping integrity, door locking devices and safety contacts, landing and car door operation and safety edges, overspeed governor and safety gear engagement test, buffers, pit equipment, and the elevator's electrical installation including earthing continuity. Inspectors issue pass/fail findings with mandatory rectification timescales for any non-conformances.
How do CE marking and periodic inspection differ?
CE marking is a one-time conformity declaration made before the elevator enters service, confirming it meets essential safety requirements of Directive 2014/33/EU. Periodic inspection is a recurring in-service check confirming the elevator maintains safe operating condition throughout its life. CE marking is the manufacturer's or installer's responsibility; periodic inspection is the building owner's obligation.
